Another sequel, another disappointment.

The Pang brothers had good ideas. Honestly they did. "The Eye", the first one, had some interesting concepts - directing and editing were of good standards, and the actors were up to the task. Of course, it was all a little bit cheesy at times, but that's almost a trademark in HK movies. The Eye 2 builds on the hype of the first one, while adding more defects. What's bad in an horror show is to give rationality to everything. It was already wrong in the first one - when something is, let's say, paranormal, the last thing we need is to give an explanation. The more there is understanding, the less scary it gets. The Eye 2 goes into a full explanation of what is going on : on one hand, the story is not even interesting, and on the other hand, there's no surprise at the corner. It becomes boring. BO-RING. In terms of actors, things are going down as well. This time Shu Qi is the main character, and apart from exploding in tears/anger, her performance is very limited. She is the one cursed with the ability to see ghosts around - and misunderstood by her peers. The other characters are more or less transparent : none of them stands out and you really have to hang on to something in order to watch the whole movie without falling asleep. Actually the special effects are not that bad. Some of them only. We can't really say that this has never been seen before, but it's well done in some parts - such as the floating ghost in mid-air. However, some other scenes look rather ridiculous and do a good job of destroying what's left of the movie. And the abuse of the "pang-brothers-way-of-filming" is hardly a good way to scare the audience. At most it gets very irritating. Overall, this is a whole waste of time. Do not watch this. Really. This is not only a bad sequel, this is simply a bad movie.
